Gunwhale Ales is an independently owned and operated brewery, blendery and taproom in Costa Mesa, California. Our beers strike a balance between the raw, wild spirit of farmhouse brewing, and the pioneering hop forward styles of California. We have an obsession with yeast driven Saisons, hoppy IPAs, and other rustic, wild and sour beers. This gives our beers uncommon qualities that are both surprisingly delicate and nuanced, yet refined and robust in their simplicity. From bright, billowy summer ales to rustic, fortifying stormers that stand up to the rougher seas, Gunwhale makes beers that reflect the culinary and cultural heritage of the West Coast.

Gunwhale is turning One! 

Please follow this link to purchase a ticket to our Anniversary Party on Dec. 3rd from Noon - 3pm! Enjoy unlimited tastings, a branded glassware to keep, live music, and Kala food truck. We got the permits to expand our tasting room outside and are expecting a good crowd for this bash. Dont miss out, there are limited tickets. We will be open after the ticketed party and we will continue celebrating until close that evening, with DJ Nasty Nativ spinning good vibes for all our friends. 


Our newest beer is WOLFBAIT, a 8.4% ABV dark farmhouse ale that is fruity, spicy and dry. On at the taproom!

OUR NEXT DOUBLE CAN RELEASE!

We will be releasing 2 beers from our taproom in Costa Mesa mid December. More info to come soon. Both of these beers will sell ultra quickly, and if you want a shot at them, please prepare to arrive early. Both beers are a collaboration with our friends from Brewery Rex, and they are both Double IPAs. The first beer is HARDOUT!, a 100% pilsner malt base, and will be fermented in stainless with our wild Saccharomyces yeast (Sacch Brux Trois). It is fruited with California Kiwi berries and dry-hopped with Motueka and Ekuanot.

The second beer is HEY OLD SPORT, and was fermented in our oak foeder with the same yeast (Trois), and is also a 100% pilsner malt base but fruited with toasted coconut, and heavily dry-hopped with Citra and Amarillo. 

These are substantial beers at 8.5% ABV, and very tropical, funky, hazy and has a harmony of big hop character. We will be having quite the shindig at the taproom that day, so stay tuned.....and check out these bad ass can designs and share with a friend.


Please also check back to see about releases of new beers, including wild fermentations and those from our barrel-aged and sour beer program.  We think you will find our beer to be - Damn Handsome - (in the traditional sense : easy to handle, vital, trustworthy, and always in good proportion).
